چکیده

We applied a new framework for behavioural research on personality differences in 26 adult tufted capuchin monkeys. Using the Behavioural Repertoire x Environmental Situations Approach, we generated systematically 20 non-lexical emic personality constructs that have high ecological validity for this species. For construct operationalisation, we obtained 146 contextualised behavioural measures repeatedly in 15 experimental situations and 2 group situations using computerised and video-assisted methods. A complete repetition after a 2-3week break within a 60-day period yielded significant test-retest reliability from individualoriented and variable-oriented viewpoints at different levels of aggregation. In accordance with well-established findings on cross-situational consistency, internal consistency was only moderate. This new and important finding highlights fundamental differences between behavioural approaches and judgment-based approaches to personality differences.

Development of maze navigation by tufted capuchins (Cebus apella).

Theories of spatial navigation hypothesize that animals use vector or topological information to choose routes, often including detours, to move objects or themselves to goals. We assessed adult capuchin monkeys' (Cebus apella) navigation through 192 virtual two-dimensional mazes that incorporated detour problems. Six monkeys initially were significantly less likely to choose the correct paths ...

Local advantage in the visual processing of hierarchical stimuli following manipulations of stimulus size and element numerosity in monkeys (Cebus apella).

Previous studies suggest that monkeys process local elements of hierarchical visual patterns more quickly and more accurately than they process the global shape. These results could be indicative of differences between relatively high visual functions of humans and non-human primates. It is, however, important to rule out that relatively low-level factors can explain these differences. We addre...

Social diffusion of novel foraging methods in brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

It has been reported that wild capuchin monkeys exhibit several group-specific behavioural traditions. By contrast, experiments have found little evidence for the social learning assumed necessary to support such traditions. The present study used a diffusion chain paradigm to investigate whether a novel foraging task could be observationally learned by capuchins (Cebus apella) and then transmi...

Determining the Value of Social Companionship to Captive Tufted Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus apella)

This study used a method similar to one introduced by Dawkins in 1990 to assess the magnitude of the psychological need for social companionship in pair-housed tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). This method permits classification of commodities as necessities or luxuries. The study directly compared the commodity of social companionship to the commodity of food, a known physiological neces...

Cerebral petalias and their relationship to handedness in capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella).

Cerebral asymmetries are thought to be associated with increased hemispheric specialization of function. We investigated cerebral petalias, the protrusion of one cerebral hemisphere relative to the other, and their relationship to lateralized behavior in capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella). Magnetic resonance images of the brain and behavioral data on a coordinated bimanual task were obtained from ...
